24 February: restructuring sovereign debt
As the recent crises in Greece and Cyprus have underlined, the international community lacks a legally and politically recognised standard procedure for restructuring the debt of bankrupt sovereigns. Instead sovereign debt crises are managed in a case-by-case nature through ad hoc negotiations and emergency meetings. Given continued weaknesses in the Eurozone and the potential of future sovereign debt crises in emerging and developing countries, there is an urgent need for a more orderly sovereign bankruptcy regime.
On 24 February GEG will host a special seminar on the question of sovereign debt restructuring. The seminar will feature a short presentation by Jeromin Zettelmeyer, Deputy Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and co-author of a recent high-level report on sovereign bankruptcy
The seminar is co-hosted with the Blavatnik School of Government and in association with the Programme on the Political Economy of Financial Markets.
