Bonn Groundswell Workshop: Catalyzing Climate Action for Resilient Development

Friday, June 5, 8:30-17:45

This workshop brings together experts, practitioners, researchers, business representatives and policy makers to discuss how an increasing number of non-state and sub-national actors engage in climate actions and how these activities can be scaled up in the Global South to specifically address the needs and priorities of developing countries. It furthermore discusses barriers and opportunities for climate actions; and how governments, the UNFCCC process, and international organizations could ensure more effective actions in developing countries.

More information on the workshop you will find in the concept note, or contact Maxim Injakin (Maxim.Injakin@die-gdi.de) or Sander Chan (Sander.Chan@die-gdi.de).

Bonn Groundswell Networking Event at the Climate Action Fair

Opening remarks from Ms. Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary, UNFCCC

Friday, June 5, 18:15-20:15

This networking event is part of a larger program of activities at and around the Bonn Climate Change Conference, to help build bridges within a broad citizens’ movement and with governments, to generate opportunities for partnerships, to inspire commitments and to create synergies between complementary initiatives. It will bring together participants from three related events, namely the Climate Action Fair (including climate action dialogues) and the Technical Expertise Meetings (TEMs) organized by the UNFCCC secretariat, and the workshop on ‘Catalyzing Climate Action for Resilient Development’, organized at the German Development Institute /Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) in collaboration with the Galvanizing the Groundswell of Climate Actions Project (GGCA) and The Energy Research Institute (TERI).

The organizers share a commitment to galvanize a broad and diverse citizens’ movement which includes cities, companies, civil society groups, researchers, and individuals, for transformative climate actions towards a low-carbon and climate resilient future. They:

·         demonstrate solutions and explore opportunities to raise pre-2020 ambitions by governments, international organizations and partners (TEMs),

·         provide a venue for interactive discussions of climate solutions (UNFCCC Climate Actions Fair),

·         explore the potential contributions of non-state and sub-national actions to resilient development, especially in developing countries (DIE/GGCA/TERI).

Bonn Groundswell Dialogue at the Climate Action Fair

Saturday, June 6, 13:30-14:45

A central part of the UNFCCC's official ‘Climate Action Fair’ program, this session raises the profile of the groundswell of climate actions to a broader audience, explaining how the groundswell supports countries and enhances success at the Paris Conference of the Parties and beyond. It will feature short presentations by rapporteurs from the Groundswell, aided by clever graphics and audiovisuals to share their most exciting, innovative and ambitious ideas. Questions will be collected from the audience and directed to the presenters. In addition, the event will include a ‘talk show’ format in which an MC engages a diverse panel of stakeholders from developing and developed countries in an interactive and conversational way.
