Workshop on the politics of economic policymaking in African countries

From 31 January – 1 February 2019, GEG's Director Emily Jones and Ricardo Soares de Oliveira, from the Department of Politics and International Relations, co-convened a two-day international workshop on the politics of economic policymaking in Africa.

The workshop brought together leading scholars from universities in the UK, Denmark, France, Germany, Ghana, Mozambique, South Africa, and the US. The group discussed and debated research on the role of political parties, the state, and capitalists in economic development; the politics of inclusion and exclusion in economic growth; how African governments are managing international economic relations; the politics of finance; labour, capital and the politics of industrialisation; and the politics of oil and economic development.

It was particularly exciting to welcome back to Oxford three Global Leaders Fellows who are working in these areas: Biniam Bedasso, Folashade Soule-Kohndou, and Rahmane Idrissa.
