Dr Nghia Trong Pham, GLF 2015-17
Nghia Trong Pham was born in 1978 in Vietnam. Nghia got his LLB degree and LLM degree (with high distinction) from the School of Law, Vietnam National University. He holds a doctorate in law from Brunel University, London. His PhD research focuses on the incorporation of international labour standards into domestic law, which made him the first PhD student from Brunel Law School to be awarded the Walduck Prize for Research Impact – the prestigious prize of Brunel University.
Nghia Trong Pham was appointed a Deputy Director General of the Legal Department, Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs, Vietnam in 2010 and was one of the youngest deputy directors general of the Ministry. In 2012, he was promoted to the position of a Deputy Director General of the Department of Law, National Assembly Office, Vietnam. In his capacities, Nghia has been involved in the making of a number of legislation and policies relating to labour and social issues, including the ratification of international treaties. He was in charge of drafting Vietnam National Reports on ILO Conventions. He participated in the Trans - Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations as Member of the Vietnam Labour Team from the very first negotiations. He was also tasked to support the Constitution Revision Committee, which contributed to the adoption of the new Constitution of Vietnam in 2013.
Over the years, Nghia has managed to combine academic achievements with leadership at work. His work has continued to include human rights and labour rights legislation processes, trade negotiations in Vietnam. His research interests cover a range of issues related to human rights, labour law, international labour standards, and trade.
Nghia has just completed his postdoctoral research at Princeton University where he examined the implications and interactions of labour clauses in FTAs on worker rights in developing countries. Nghia is currently working on a project investigating at understanding how domestic politics interact and determine international negotiation and vice-versa in the negotiation and ratification process of labour commitments in FTAs.
